About Freed's Bakery
When Milton and Esther Freed first came to Las Vegas in 1959 it was a jumping waterhole with a population of 17,000 that became a town of 35,000 every Friday afternoon. The Fried family recognized it as, “A place like no other”. Milton unpacked his auto, bursting at the seams with 5 children, a wife, seven horns, and all manner of things jammed into cracks and strapped to the roof rack. Las Vegas was their new home.
As a talented musician working on Broadway, Milt was introduced to the finest foods New York had to offer. For Milt, nothing beat the renowned dessert creations of Hortense Spiers… Nesselrode, toasted coconut, and chocolate cream pies… Unbelievable 6” Cheesecake… They all came out of the basement of a brownstone on 90th Street at Central Park West.
Milt always had a knack for hard work and good business. He saw a need for great desserts in Las Vegas and in 1959 he and his wife Esther became managers of an eleven-seat snack bar in a thriving up-scale super market owned by a Las Vegas Commissioner. The first morning Milt ran to a Spudnut Shop and picked up his first tray of donuts… WHAMO! He went back three times that day.
Three weeks later, the Panorama Market was wheeling in a six-pan oven, 30 quart mixer, and a refrigerator barely large enough to hold a handful of cake slices. Milton was no baker, but he knew good stuff. From time to time as bakers passed through this jumping town, none were turned away without the chance to “Show me what you can do. Make me your favorite thing.” They came from all over: Boston, New York, Philly, Miami, Europe… Each bringing their own twists and versions of different formulas and recipes.
Today, over 50 years later, Milton Fried’s daughter Joni who was raised in the bakery and taught by those master bakers can be caught greeting customers and chatting with longtime friends as she keeps Freed’s Bakery running better than ever before. Max Freed, a grandson of Milton and Esther Fried can also be seen behind the scenes as he works hard to produce the same level of service and quality of product that Freed’s Bakery has been providing for 50 years.
Las Vegas has become the Entertainment and Wedding Capital of the World and in the late 90s Freed’s Bakery came out with their incredible website www.freedsbakery.com which launched them into global fame.
